What is 3 Tesla?

Standard MRI (open magnets and 1.5 Tesla operating at low and mid field) and High-Field MRI (3 Tesla MRI operating at high field.) Previously, 0.23 Tesla magnets were low field; 0.35, 0.6 and 1.0 Tesla magnets were mid field; and 1.5 Tesla magnets were high field. Things have changed.

Whereas 1.5 Tesla allowed the highest resolution before, 3 Tesla now allows the highest resolution possible for clinical patients. 1.5 Tesla is the “old” standard. 3 Tesla is now the “gold” standard. A 3 Tesla magnet provides nearly twice the image resolution as a 1.5 Tesla scanner. That’s the difference in resolution between a 1.5 Megapixel and a 3 Megapixel image on your digital camera, like using a Nikon Cool Pix 3000 rather than the one built into your cell phone.

Siemens Trio 3 Tesla (3T) MRI
The Siemens Trio is the first generation of true 3T whole-body 3T MR system. The largest diversity of safe technologies have been incorprated into the design to ensure the best 3T examinations for all organs.  You can see the difference in the images below.  One was produced on a 1.5 T MRI and the other was on a 3.0 3T unit, the same model as we have.  Can you tell which is which?

On the right you can see much greater resolution and clearly it is the 3T image.  Even more clear is patients's spinal problem which is much more likely to get the best treatment now that it can be well visualized (images courtesy of Siemens.)
